Care more. Car less. Ride transit.
Every time you choose transit, you make a positive impact on the environment.
-
Riding the bus reduces harmful pollution.
-
One bus can replace 40 cars on the road.
-
Riders can reduce, reuse and recycle with more than 550 waste and recycling containers located at YRT/Viva bus stops and terminals.
-
There are currently 10 YRT solar-powered bus shelters.
-
All YRT/Viva buses are equipped with two bicycle racks. As well, there are 182 bicycle racks located at bus stops, terminals and vivastations throughout York Region.

We're dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint
YRT/Viva's Clean Air campaign encourages public transit use as a way of reducing air pollution. We use biodiesel in Viva vehicles and ultra-low sulphur diesel in YRT buses; both fuels have shown to significantly reduce exhaust emissions.
YRT/Viva's Anti-Idling program aims to further reduce exhaust emissions. This program restricts buses to a maximum idling time of three minutes. Additional benefits include reduced fuel consumption, maintenance costs and noise impacts.
Our Anti-Idling program includes exemptions based on best practices by North American transit agencies. These exemptions focus on:
-
Safety
Vehicles may idle before 5 a.m. and after 9 p.m. to ensure operator and passenger safety. Interior lights will remain on. -
Extreme temperatures
Vehicles may idle when outdoor temperatures are above 27 degrees Celsius and below -5 degrees Celsius to allow heaters and air conditioners to operate and maintain passenger comfort. -
Passenger boarding/alighting
Vehicles may idle when passengers are boarding and alighting. This will allow doors to function properly and ensure passenger safety. -
Bus air pressure
Vehicles may idle when air pressure is lower than 100 psi. This will allow proper air for brakes and doors.
YRT/Viva staff will be monitoring adherence to the Anti-Idling program.
