Frequently Asked Questions
How will the service change?
As of September 2, 2018, YRT will no longer provide transit service directly into the York University Keele Campus. Travellers will be taken to the Pioneer Village Bus Terminal, located at Steeles Avenue and Settler Road, where they can walk to the campus, or transfer onto the TTC Line 1 Subway for direct services into the campus. Viva purple will be restructured to provide service between the City of Markham and Richmond Hill Centre Terminal along the Highway 7 East corridor. See service changes above. |
Why are you no longer providing service into York University?
With the opening of the TTC Line 1 Subway extension into the City of Vaughan, the TTC and YRT entered into a binding agreement requiring YRT to remove all transit service operating within the York University Keele Campus. This agreement was made in order to avoid duplication of service between YRT and the TTC Line 1 Subway. |
Why are other transit agencies still going into York University? |
Other transit agencies are not bound by the same agreement that requires YRT to remove service from York University Keele Campus. This agreement was made specifically between the TTC and YRT to avoid duplication of service between the two agencies as the TTC Line 1 Subway was being extended into York Region. |
Why can't YRT renegotiate the agreement with TTC? |
The agreement is based on the Council and Board-approved 2009 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between York Region, the TTC and the City of Toronto. The terms and conditions of the MOU are what enabled the construction of the subway extension to move forward, and addressed the future operations and maintenance of the subway and associated stations and bus terminals. Included in the MOU was a TTC stipulation that the Region discontinue services to the York University Keele Street Campus upon commencement of subway operations. The agreement will not be renegotiated. |
Why is Viva purple changing? |
As part of Moving to 2020, the YRT 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, Viva purple was designed to service the future Cornell Terminal in the City of Markham and Richmond Hill Centre Terminal in the Town of Richmond Hill. The restructure will strengthen the grid network and provide frequent service along major corridors throughout the Region, including Highway 7. Click here for the Moving to 2020 plan. |
What happened to the Route 100? |
Route 100 - York University was originally planned to offer direct service between Richmond Hill Centre Terminal and York University Keele Campus. This was to replace Viva purple service west of Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. The budget for this initiative has been reallocated to improve service on corridors where ridership demand continues to grow and to assist with construction delays on Viva corridors. Customers will continue to have the option of using Viva orange from Richmond Hill Centre Terminal to connect with Route 3 - Thornhill, Route 20 - Jane, Route 96 -Keele-Yonge, or Route 107/107B - Keele to Pioneer Village Bus Terminal located north of York University Keele Campus, or connect with the TTC Line 1 Subway at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. |
Will I need to pay an additional fare when transferring to/from a YRT bus and the TTC Line 1 Subway? |
Customers will be required to pay a TTC fare when boarding the TTC Line 1 Subway, and YRT fare when boarding a YRT bus, as they do currently. YRT will continue to work with the TTC and Metrolinx towards achieving an integrated fare system. |
When will you have fare integration with TTC? |
The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) transit agencies participate in fare integration discussions with the province; however, at this time, it does not appear that fare integration will happen by September 2018.
When will there be discounts for post-secondary students?
YRT continues to work with Metrolinx and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) transit agencies towards a consistent approach to transit fares in the region that is customer-focused, simplified, and reflects the quality and value of service provided to all travellers, including post-secondary students. In an effort to avoid students having to pay two fares when travelling from York Region or the City of Brampton into the City of Toronto, the three transit agencies proposed the introduction of a university universal pass (U-pass) in December 2017. YRT staff did meet with the Federation of Students who declined the implementation of the U-pass in 2018 and expressed their position was to wait and see what the province would implement in regards to fare integration. For more information regarding the U-pass, please contact the York University Student Federation directly at 416-736-2100 ext. 58066. |
Will the GTA Weekly Pass be available for purchase?
Yes, passengers wishing to use YRT, TTC, or Brampton Transit services will still be able to purchase the GTA weekly pass at participating ticket agents, including Inkblotz on the York University Keele Campus. Click here to find a ticket agent near you. |
